Members of our executive board currently are working on various research projects in migration.

Merita Zulfiu Alili is involved in project called “Inclusion of Roma and Migrants in Schools: Trainings, Open Discussions and Youth Volunteering Activities (RoMigSc)”.

The project objectives are creating inclusive and democratic learning environments, encouraging youth participation, developing inclusion and outreach practices to reach young people, preventing and combating any form of discrimination and segregation in education, fostering mutual understanding and respect among people and enhancing the quality of non-formal learning activities, youth work practices and volunteering.

Education is crucial for successful integration. Although diversity is an opportunity to make schools more inclusive, creative and open-minded, inequality in education is the highest among Roma and migrant children. Migrant and Roma often face discrimination and xenophobia. For instance, the educational achievements of these groups are in general poorer, they are more likely to drop out from compulsory education, leading to higher risks of social marginalization, to a failure to integrate, and, ultimately, to poverty, which has long-term adverse effects on the social development and economic growth of the host country. The main aim of this project is thus to support better integration of Roma and migrant children in education through various activities.

The engagement of youth in volunteering is also fostered in the project. Volunteering plays a significant role in the youth’s social inclusion. It allows them to engage as citizens, as well as to gain experience, which can enhance their employment opportunities. However, volunteering needs to be recognized as a form of non-formal learning.

Nermin Oruč is currently involved in project called “Diaspora for Development (D4D)”.

Project aims to increase socio-economic opportunities and perspectives for people in BiH, and to improve their livelihoods through increased diaspora engagement. This will be attained through implementation of three specific outcomes: BiH Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees and BiH Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with government institutions at different levels, use and further develop their instruments to actively connect, exchange, and engage with diaspora members and organizations. Local governments align their development strategies to the diaspora policy framework at higher government levels, provide more and better services to diaspora members, and encourage community initiatives to attract diaspora know-how and investment. Diaspora partners transfer know-how and skills and make joint investments with private sector actors in BIH, contributing positively to key economic indicators. The Project contributes towards mobilizing and harvesting diaspora’s support toward BiH socio-economic development, including linking diaspora with BIH public, non-government, and private economic sectors. Currently, the IOM’s team of experts is carrying out diaspora mapping in 10 selected destination countries.

In early 2015, think tanks from 7 WB countries, which work for many years in the field of migration, created the Western Balkans Migration Network (WB-MIGNET), a new community of practice in the field of migration focused regionally on the Western Balkans.

The first activity of the WB-MIGNET is development of the Observatory for the WB, an online platform for policy makers, researchers and donors interested in the migration issues in WB countries.
