The policy brief “Emigration from the Western Balkans” authored by our Director of Research Nermin Oruč is published in the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung. The six Western Balkan countries have a long history of emigration resulting in large diaspora communities. However, comprehensive strategies to tap the potential of diaspora communities for development are still in the making. The article briefly describes the history of emigration from the Western Balkans and then focuses on the diaspora and development of the region. It also provides an overview of diaspora policies of Western Balkan countries and describes the Western Balkans region as a migrant transit zone.
